Our Mission

Unlike traditional healthcare professions, mental health is one of the few fields without a national licensing system. Counseling is no exception, and for students who want to practice outside their home state, the licensing process can be confusing and frustrating.

Counseling Accreditation was created to help provide clarity, guidance, and insights to both current and future counselors on how to achieve licensure within and outside of their home state.

What We Cover

To accomplish this goal, we maintain regularly updated guides on the major accrediting bodies and how they relate to individual degree programs. We focus on the bodies that matter in mental health (CACREP, MPCAC, COAMFTE, APA, and others) and strive to answer the questions students often have about accreditation and the portability of degrees and licenses. We also dive into the specific licensures themselves, including LPCs, LMHCs, LMFTs, and many more, covering the licensure requirements and career overviews for each. And as more states join the Counseling Compact, we keep our member-state list current and explain what the agreement means for counselors who want to practice across state lines.

The research, writing, and approval of content for this site has been completed by licensed counselors, educators, and industry professionals who have practiced in the field of mental health themselves. Our content has clear author bios that show who completed the content and when we last verified it. Our site strives to keep our content as up-to-date as possible to align with the constantly changing counseling licensing landscape.

Whether you’re looking to get into the field of counseling, a graduate student honing in on your state’s licensure requirements, or a practicing counselor looking to become licensed in a different state, our helpful quizzes and content can point you in the right direction.
